Things to know about separate VISAS!

As you may know, visas are usually stamped directly on an international passport. However, in reality, we often come across cases of separate visas being issued. So what are the differences between these two forms, let’s find out together.

What is a separate visa?

A separate visa is a type of visa issued in the form of a separate document accompanying a passport or an equivalent document that replaces a passport. Separate visas are issued by Vietnamese law according to the NC2 template, which includes the following information:

  • Visa number
  • Type of visa (visa category)
  • Visa expiration date
  • Number of entries allowed
  • Name of the visa holder
  • Date of birth, nationality, photo
  • Passport number
  • Duration of stay, date of issuance, and issuing authority

In addition, separate visas have a “annotation” section to record important information.

In which cases are separate visas granted?

According to the regulations in Article 11 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam in 2014, the following cases will be granted separate visas:

– Passport with no more blank pages: There are blank pages in a passport for foreign countries to affix their visas, and these pages are located right after the page containing the personal information of the passport holder.

Since passports have a long validity period, typically 10 years, if a person frequently travels between countries and often needs to apply for visas, the visa pages in their passport may be used up before it expires. In this case, if they have not been able to apply for a new passport, they may be granted a separate visa. However, in many countries, a passport must have blank pages for visas to be affixed, and they do not grant separate visas. To apply for a visa in these countries, a new passport must be obtained:

– Passport of a country without diplomatic relations with Vietnam: Vietnam has established diplomatic relations with many countries around the world, however, there are still some countries and territories that have not established diplomatic relations with Vietnam. In this case, the visa will be issued separately instead of being affixed to the passport of that country.
– International travel documents issued to non-citizens: This is a document issued by the competent authority of a country to non-citizens residing in that country and approved by the competent authority of Vietnam.

Those without citizenship cannot have a passport, therefore, they use international travel documents. This type of document does not have a page for visa affixation, so visas will be issued separately. However, this document must be approved by the competent authority of Vietnam.

– Diplomatic, defense, and security reasons: This is a quite special case where visas will be issued separately for diplomatic, defense, and security reasons.
