Detailed Guide to Vietnam Visa Regulations You Need to Know

A Vietnam visa is a document issued by the competent authorities of Vietnam, allowing foreign nationals to enter Vietnam. 1. Countries exempt from Vietnam visa:

  • Countries that are exempted from Vietnam visa for up to 90 days: Chile, Panama, APEC cardholders
  • Countries that are exempt from Vietnam visa for up to 30 days: Cambodia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand
  • Countries that are exempt from Vietnam visa for up to 21 days: Philippines

2. Types of Vietnam visa symbols

The visa symbols are regulated in Article 8 of the 2014 Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam (amended in 2019), as follows:

  • NG1 – Issued to members of the invited delegation of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President, Chairman of the National Assembly, and Prime Minister.
  • NG2 – Issued to members of the invited delegation of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vice President, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court, Chief Procurator of the Supreme People’s Procuracy, State Auditor General; Members of the same level invited a delegation of Ministers and equivalents, Provincial Party Committee Secretary, City Party Committee Secretary, Chairman of the People’s Council, Chairman of the People’s Committee of the province, and centrally-run cities.
  • NG3 – Issued to members of diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations affiliated to the United Nations, representative offices of intergovernmental organizations and their spouses, children under 18 years old, domestic helpers accompanying during the term.
  • NG4 – Issued to individuals coming to work with diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations affiliated to the United Nations, representative offices of intergovernmental organizations and their spouses, children under 18 years old accompanying; individuals visiting members of diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations affiliated to the United Nations, representative offices of intergovernmental organizations.
  • LV1 – Issued to individuals coming to work with committees, agencies, units under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam; National Assembly, Government, Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, Supreme People’s Court, Supreme People’s Procuracy, State Audit, Ministries, Governmental agencies, non-departmental public agencies under the Government; Provincial Party Committee, City Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee of the province, centrally-run cities.
  • LV2 – Issued to those who work with political and social organizations, social organizations, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
  • LS – Issued to foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam.
  • ĐT1 – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign-invested organizations with a capital contribution value of VND 100 billion or more or investment in preferred investment sectors, or investment in preferred investment areas as decided by the Government.
  • ĐT2 – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign-invested organizations with a capital contribution value ranging from VND 50 billion to less than VND 100 billion or investment in encouraged investment sectors as decided by the Government.
  • ĐT3 – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign-invested organizations with a capital contribution value ranging from VND 3 billion to less than VND 50 billion.
  • ĐT4 – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and representatives of foreign-invested organizations with a capital contribution value of less than VND 3 billion.
  • DN1 – Issued to foreigners working for enterprises or other organizations with legal personality as stipulated by Vietnamese law.
  • DN2 – Issued to foreigners coming to Vietnam to offer services, establish commercial presence, and perform other activities under international conventions of which Vietnam is a member.
  • NN1 – Issued to the head of representative offices, projects of international organizations, and non-governmental organizations in Vietnam.
  • NN2 – Issued to the head of representative offices, branches of foreign traders, and representative offices of economic, cultural, and professional organizations of foreign countries in Vietnam.
  • NN3 – Issued to those who work with non-governmental organizations, representative offices, branches of foreign traders, and representative offices of economic, cultural, and professional organizations of foreign countries in Vietnam.
  • DH – Issued to those who come to Vietnam for internships or study.
  • HN – Issued to those who attend conferences or seminars in Vietnam.
  • PV1 – Issued to permanent reporters and journalists in Vietnam.
  • PV2 – Issued to reporters and journalists for short-term activities in Vietnam.
  • LĐ1 – Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam with confirmation that they are not subject to a work permit, except for cases where international conventions of which Vietnam is a member have different regulations.
  • LĐ2 – Issued to foreigners working in Vietnam who are required to have a work permit.
  • DL – Issued to those who come to Vietnam for tourism.
  • TT – Issued to foreigners who are spouses, children, etc. of Vietnamese citizens.
  • VR – Issued to people visiting relatives or for other purposes.
  • SQ – Issued to Persons who have a working relationship with an overseas visa-issuing authority and their spouse, children, or a person who has a written request from a competent agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the host country. or Persons who have a guaranty note from diplomatic missions or consular offices of countries located in the host country wishing to enter Vietnam for market survey, tourism, visiting relatives, or getting medical treatment.
  • EV – Electronic Visa.

3. Conditions for applying for a Vietnam visa for foreigners

To be granted a visa to enter Vietnam, foreigners must meet the following four conditions:

  • Have a passport or international travel document.
  • Have an invitation or guarantee from a Vietnamese agency, organization, or individual.
  • Do not fall into cases of denied entry.
  • The following cases requesting a visa must have additional documents proving the purpose of entry:
    • Foreigners who come to invest must have documents proving investment in Vietnam in accordance with the Law on Investment.
    • Foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam must have a practicing license in accordance with the Law on Lawyers.
    • Foreigners coming to work must have a work permit in accordance with the Law on Labor.
    • Foreigners coming to study must have a letter of acceptance from a Vietnamese educational institution.

4. Types of Vietnam visa issuance

Currently, there are 3 forms of Vietnam visa, including:

  • E-visa: Valid for a single entry with a duration of fewer than 30 days. Issued online in electronic form (PDF).

  • Separate visa: Only issued in the following 4 cases:
    • Valid international travel document;
    • The passport has run out of visa pages;
    • For diplomatic, military, or security reasons;
