Vietnam Visa extension service for foreigners

The extension of visas for foreigners in accordance with Vietnamese law does not discriminate based on nationality when applying for Vietnam visa extension, visa applications, and temporary residence card issuance.

The new regulations, including Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam No. 47/2014/QH2013 and Decree No. 07/2017/NĐ-CP on the issuance of electronic visas for entry and exit of foreigners in Vietnam, will apply.

The regulations on Vietnam visa extension, visa application, and temporary residence card issuance for foreigners are presented in general provisions as well as in detailed procedures for the issuance of visas and entry permits for foreigners entering and exiting Vietnam.

I. GENERAL PROVISIONS OF THE Vietnam VISA EXTENSION SERVICE

  • Visas and entry permits for foreigners cannot be converted for different purposes.
  • Visas and entry permits are issued separately for each person, except for cases where children under 14 years of age are granted joint passports with their father, mother, or legal guardian.
  • Visas and entry permits are issued on passports or separately depending on specific cases and countries during the entry and exit process.
  • Vietnam’s visa has single-entry and multiple-entry types. A single-entry visa is valid for only one entry and exit, while a multiple-entry visa has no restrictions on the number of entries and exits during the validity period of the visa.
  • The law prescribes the symbols of visas, and temporary residence cards, which are abbreviations for the purpose of the person applying for the visa with very clear symbols:
Visa symbol DT – Issued to foreign investors in Vietnam and foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam.
    • Visa symbol DN – Issued to people working for businesses in Vietnam.
    • Visa symbol NN1 – Issued to the head of representative offices, projects of international organizations, and non-governmental organizations in Vietnam.
    • Visa symbol NN2 – Issued to the head of representative offices, branches of foreign traders, and representative offices of economic, cultural, and other professional organizations of foreign countries in Vietnam.
    • Visa symbol NN3 – Issued to people working for non-governmental organizations, representative offices, branches of foreign traders, and representative offices of economic, cultural, and professional organizations of foreign countries in Vietnam.

    • Visa with the symbol TT: issued for foreign spouses, children under 18 years old of foreigners with LV1, LV2, DT, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LD visa or for foreign parents, spouses, and children of Vietnamese citizens.
  • Unilateral visa exemption is granted to foreigners from 13 countries including Japan, South Korea, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Belarus, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy for a 15-day stay with a passport validity of at least 6 months and a return ticket. However, for subsequent visits, foreigners who wish to enjoy visa exemption must have at least 30 days between their exit and entry dates into Vietnam. In case of fewer than 30 days, citizens of these countries must apply for a visa to Vietnam according to regulations.
  • Vietnam has introduced E-Visa for citizens of 40 countries with a one-month visa with entry and exit from Vietnam. This is an important reform in administrative procedures for entry and exit in the 4.0 era, which reflects Vietnam’s open-door policy and deep integration. It is a driving force for the development of the tourism industry in particular and the Vietnamese socio-economic development in general in the coming time.
  • Vietnam is currently applying for bilateral visa exemption for 30 days for tourists from ASEAN countries (except Brunei for 14 days) and the governments of member countries also apply the same visa exemption for Vietnamese citizens when entering these countries. The condition for visa exemption is a passport validity of at least 6 months and a return ticket when going through immigration procedures.
  • Temporary residence cards are issued for foreign investors and foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam with a maximum validity of 5 years.
  • Temporary residence cards for relatives of foreigners have a maximum validity of not more than 5 years

  • Foreigners (except for those exempt from visas) entering Vietnam are required to apply for a Vietnamese visa, which can be through a guarantee letter from a company, organization, or individual, or by applying for an e-visa.

Procedure for applying for a new visa, extending a visa for foreigners who have entered and are temporarily residing in Vietnam

When a foreigner enters Vietnam and their visa has expired, they can apply for a visa extension or a new visa, depending on each specific case. The new or extended visa can be a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. When applying for a visa extension, foreigners must meet the conditions specified by the law, including having a work permit/exemption or an equivalent document if they are workers, proof of family relationships such as marriage registration or birth certificate if they are visiting relatives, an investment license or capital contribution certificate if they are investors, or a tour program or itinerary if they are tourists. II. Procedure for applying for an e-visa for foreigners entering and leaving the country

Currently, Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of 40 countries, with a visa validity period of 1 month and the right to enter 28 international border gates of Vietnam. The e-visa procedure is entirely implemented on the internet and computer, from registering information to paying and receiving the visa result. This is a level 4 administrative procedure reform, the highest level in building e-government that Vietnam is aiming for. For more information on e-visas, please visit this link.

III. Procedure for issuing long-term temporary residence cards for foreigners

The temporary residence card is the longest type of visa issued by the Vietnamese government for foreigners, with a minimum validity period of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years, and is valid for multiple entries and exits. The temporary residence card is a green card issued separately from the passport, with personal information and the period of temporary residence in Vietnam. The temporary residence card is issued to foreigners who are investors, representatives of foreign organizations or agencies, or have a work permit or exemption and are allowed to reside in Vietnam for a long-term period.
