China has become a promising market for Vietnamese and foreign businessmen who seek investment and development opportunities due to its rapid economic growth in recent years and the future. To facilitate business trips to this country, the first thing you need is to obtain a Chinese work visa. Today, 

1. What is a Chinese work visa?

The Chinese business visa, designated as “M”, is a type of visa for those who want to come to China for business purposes and engage in commercial activities for a short period of time.

Based on the number of entries and duration of stay, the Chinese business visa is divided into 4 types:

  • Visa 3T1L (valid for 3 months with a single entry)
  • Visa 3T2L (valid for 3 months with two entries)
  • Visa 6TNL (valid for 6 months with multiple entries)
  • Visa 1NNL (valid for 1 year with multiple entries)

3. Documents required for applying for a Chinese work visa

Unlike other Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan, when applying for a Chinese work visa, you are not required to provide proof of financial support. Instead, you need to prepare the following specific documents:

  •  Passport
    • Original passport: with at least 6 months validity from the date of application and at least 2 blank visa pages. (If you hold two or more passports, you must provide all valid passports. In some cases, you may also be required to provide expired passports.)
    • A photocopy of the passport pages containing personal information.
  • Visa application form, appointment confirmation, and photo:
    •  Visa application form, appointment confirmation, and photo: The visa application form should be completed online through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center’s website by filling in the “Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China” and signing it by hand. Then, you need to bring the completed form to the visa application center to submit the application.

  • Photo: 2 recent passport-sized photos (4×6 cm) with white background, taken within the last 6 months.

Appointment form: After successfully booking an online appointment, you need to print the appointment form and bring it to the center along with other required documents.

Note: For first-time overseas travel, a copy of the household registration book or residence confirmation document is required.

  • Documents from relevant Chinese entities or individuals include: Business registration certificate and Invitation letter. The invitation letter must include the following information:
    • Personal information of the invited individual: name, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.;
    • Information about the invited individual’s trip: the purpose of the visit to China, dates of arrival and departure, places to be visited, relationship with the inviting entity or individual, source of funding, etc.;
    • Information about the inviting entity: name of the entity or individual, phone number, address, company stamp, legal representative or signature of the inviting entity.
  • Documents from the entity in Vietnam (the entity sending the employee on a business trip) include: Business registration certificate and Invitation letter.

4. Process of applying for a Chinese work visa

The process of applying for a Chinese work visa includes the following steps:

  • Step 1: Prepare the documents (make sure to have all required documents)
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment to submit the documents

You can visit the Chinese Embassy website to schedule an appointment quickly. Although this is not mandatory, it can help make the document submission process smoother.

  • Step 3: Submit the documents

Submit the work visa application documents to the Chinese visa application center at the following addresses:

  • Saigon Trade Center, 37 Ton Duc Thang Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
  • Truong Thinh Building, 1 Phung Chi Kien Street, Nghia Do Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi
  • Indochina Riverside Towers, 74 Bach Dang Street, Hai Chau District, Danang

You should arrive at least 15 minutes early for your appointment and wait in line to have your documents checked by a staff member. After that, you will receive a number to wait for your turn to submit your documents. Then, you will receive a payment receipt and wait for your turn.

  • Step 4: Receive the visa result

The processing time for a Chinese work visa application is typically 4-6 business days or 10-20 days if there is a high volume of applications. When collecting your Chinese work visa, make sure to bring the receipt. In addition, the Chinese visa application center does not accept postal delivery or offer a passport return delivery service. Therefore, if you cannot collect the visa in person, you may authorize someone else to do so.

Note: If you lose the receipt, you must bring your original ID card or a copy of it to collect your passport and visa. You cannot authorize someone else to collect them on your behalf.

5. Fee for Chinese Work Visa Application

China work visa application fee = Visa stamping fee + CVASC service fee:

  • The fee for a Chinese business visa application consists of the visa fee and the CVASC (Chinese Visa Application Service Center) service fee.
  • Visa fee:
    • 3-month single entry visa: 60 USD
    • 3-month double entry visa: 90 USD
    • 6-month multiple entry visa: 120 USD
    • 1-year multiple entry visa: 180 USD
  • CVASC service fee: 673,000 VND


  • The visa fee is paid to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate General and is charged in US dollars. The actual fee may vary depending on the type of visa.
  • The CVASC service fee is paid in Vietnamese dong at the cashier counter after the applicant completes the application. This fee is non-refundable whether the visa is granted or not. W

6. Tips for Chinese Work Visa Application with Quan Lieu Services:

  •  Based on experience, the best time to apply for a Chinese business visa is between one and three months before the intended travel date.
  • For first-time travelers, a photocopy of their household registration booklet or a residence certificate is required (which can be obtained online or from the local immigration authority).
  • The invitation letter can be in the form of a fax, copy, or printout, but the consular officer may require the original.
  • Additional documents or an interview may be requested by the consular officer depending on the situation.
  • The consular officer has the discretion to decide whether to issue a visa, the duration of stay, and the number of entries based on the specific circumstances of the applicant.
  • The applicant must ensure that all the documents provided for the visa application are accurate and free of errors, as any inaccuracies or mistakes may lead to a long delay or denial of entry into China.
