The Vietnam visa exemption certificate (also known as Vietnam 5-year visa, or 5-year visa exemption certificate, in English) is a valid travel document for entry and exit from Vietnam, issued to Vietnamese nationals residing abroad and foreign spouses, children of Vietnamese nationals residing abroad, or Vietnamese citizens.

1. Process for obtaining a new 5-year Vietnam visa cost exemption certificate and associated fees

  • The application for a new Vietnam 5-year visa exemption certificate includes:
    • A passport or travel document, a document allowing international travel, or a document allowing residency abroad issued by an authorized foreign agency to Vietnamese citizens who have settled abroad.
    • A visa exemption certificate application form (NA9 form) with 2 photos (one photo to be affixed to the form).
    • Documents proving eligibility for a visa exemption certificate:
      • Vietnamese citizens who have settled abroad must submit a notarized copy of their birth certificate, a decision to renounce Vietnamese citizenship, a certificate of loss of Vietnamese citizenship, or other documents that indicate their previous Vietnamese citizenship.
      • Foreigners must submit a notarized copy of documents proving that they are a spouse, child, or parent of a Vietnamese citizen or a Vietnamese citizen who has settled abroad.

  • Steps to follow:
    • Step 1: Prepare the documents according to regulations.
    • Step 2: Submit the documents to one of the two Immigration Management Department offices under the Ministry of Public Security:

  • The dossier for re-issuing a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate includes:
    • A foreign passport or international travel document with at least 1-year validity remaining, or a residence permit issued by a foreign authority with at least 1-year validity remaining (accompanied by a copy for record-keeping purposes);
    • One declaration form (according to the template)
    • Two new color photos sized 4×6 cm, white background, straight face, head uncovered, and no colored glasses (one photo attached to the declaration form, one photo provided separately);
    • In case of a lost certificate, a report of the lost document is required to be submitted;
    • A certified true copy of or the original document to be compared with, proving the content to be adjusted in the visa exemption certificate.
  • The process includes the following steps: 
    • Step 1: Prepare the dossier according to the regulations

4.1. Can a Vietnamese national apply for a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate for their foreign father?

  • Answer: No! The 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate is granted to foreigners who are spouses, children of Vietnamese citizens, or Vietnamese nationals residing abroad. This means that if the father is Vietnamese, a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate cannot be applied for the foreign father. If you are a Vietnamese national, you cannot apply for a 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate for your foreign father. 

4.2. How long is the validity period of the 5-year Vietnam visa exemption certificate?

  • Answer: Those entering Vietnam with a visa exemption certificate are allowed to temporarily reside in Vietnam for no more than 6 months per entry (if the visa exemption certificate is valid for less than 6 months, they are allowed to stay until the expiration date) and can be extended for no more than 6 months if there are legitimate reasons.

  • Answer: The 5-year visa exemption certificate is also known as the visa exemption book and is granted to Vietnamese nationals residing abroad who only have a permanent residence document issued by a foreign country and users of passports from countries or territories with which Vietnam has no diplomatic relations.
